Joe Dias is Professor in Hand and Orthopaedic Surgery and Head of Academic Team of Musculoskeletal Surgery (AToMS) at the University Hospitals of Leicester. He is a Consultant Hand and Orthopaedic Surgeon for the University Hospitals of Leicester.
Profossor Dias graduated from Bombay University with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B;B.S) degree. He has since received Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and England and a Doctorate of Medicine from Leicester University.
He has a special interest in epidemiology of hand and wrist disorders, Dupuytren’s contracture, the outcome of interventions in upper limb and hand trauma and interventions in wrist disorders. His research has focused on clinically-based investigations of effectiveness of interventions for hand and upper limb disorders. He has a special interest in education.
He has published over 160 scientific articles, over 20 other publications and over 30 chapters in books most on hand surgery. He has 24 publications on scaphoid fractures. He has authored multiple national reports and NICE accredited clinical pathways.
Professor Dias has received a number of grants from societies and companies to fund his studies, including a grant from the BSSH for a national study on the outcome of Dupuytren’s contracture surgery and a £2.2 million grant from NIHR HTA to investigate scaphoid fracture management. He is the Chief Investigator for POST, POST+, VOC and PreMieRE (Patient Safety) Study. He is a co-applicant on the HTA funded (1.9 million) UKFROST and DRAFFT2 study and is the chief investigator for the DISC (1.9 million) study.
He was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hand Surgery (Europe edition) and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Professor Dias was President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) in 2008 and was President of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) in 2012. He is a member of international societies FESSH, IFSSH and the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand.
He was Head of School of Surgery at the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery (South) and currently leads an orthopaedic research team (AToMS), with 5 MD/PhD students and 2 BSc students at the University of Leicester.
He was Chair of the PbR Tariff for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the UK and also Chairs the EWG on T&O HRGs. He was Chair of the Clinical Commissioning Guidance development group and on the boards of the UK Department of Health Enhanced Recovery and Shared Decision Making programmes.
He is Chair of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Clinical Senate.
