Sebastian Dawson-Bowling is a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon specialising in all aspects of lower limb surgery, most predominantly primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. Following undergraduate medical studies at the University of Cambridge (where he also rowed on the winning team in the annual University Boat Race), he undertook specialist orthopaedic training in London and the South-East, culminating in fellowship level experience at both the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
He is based principally at the Royal London Hospital, where he works within the Major Trauma service, as well as treating both complex elective hip and knee patients, and those presenting with either deep infection or periprosthetic fracture.
He is Orthopaedic Clinical Network Director for Barts Health NHS Trust as a whole, and is currently leading on the establishment of a specialist regional Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre for the management of tertiary elective referrals.
Mr Dawson-Bowling maintains an active interest in clinical research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. In addition to having co-authored three postgraduate orthopaedic textbooks and numerous book chapters, he holds both a Masters’ degree in Medical Law, and an MSc based on his laboratory investigation into uncemented hip resurfacing implants. Current research interests include the optimisation of accelerated recovery pathways for patients undergoing joint replacement surgery, and the establishment of ‘best practice’ clinical pathways for periprosthetic fracture management. He sits on the editorial boards of both Bone and Joint 360 and the NJR, and is honorary president of the recently formed London Undergraduate Orthopaedic Society.
Sebastian is married to a psychiatrist and has two children. In his (occasional moments of) spare time he enjoys classical music, food and wine.
