Jim Harrison is a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon based at the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust. He is the Africa Regional Director for AO Alliance, and an Honorary Professor of the University of Liverpool. He has been connected with WOC for 27 years.
Jim previously worked for 11 years in Malawi with Cure International and the Government Medical College, and has also worked in Zimbabwe. He was foundation Medical Director of the Beit Cure International hospital, Blantyre, Malawi. He is a foundation Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa. Through the AO Alliance, Jim has supported development of Trauma and Orthopaedics in more than 20 sub-Saharan African countries by partnering with local T&O surgeons and nurses in education and capacity building. ‘We envision a world where timely and appropriate fracture care is available to everyone’.
Jim also believes that research is an important component of capacity building. He is a founder member of the Orthopaedic Research Collaborative for Africa (ORCA). He has published on T&O in the Low income country setting, including research on the impact of HIV on surgical outcomes. He was the founder of the national arthroplasty registry in Malawi – now in its 16 year. He continues to promote awareness of the huge global health issue of ‘Injury’, and to research the scale of the problem and the impact of cost-effective interventions.
Jim’s contribution to T&O development in LICs has been acknowledged by the British Orthopaedic Association Presidential Merit award in 2014, and the World Orthopaedic Concern Arthur Eyre-Brook medal in 2017.
