Andrew Manktelow was a medical student in London, and trained in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He is now a consultant at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery.

I completed my training as the Lecturer in the Academic Department of Orthopaedics at University College, London.  Towards the end of my training I worked for a year at Harvard University at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  My work in the USA was centred around primary and revision arthroplasty.  It was in America that I developed a specific interest in hip arthroplasty and hip revision surgery.

In 1999 I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery.  I have continued to work to progress my skills and develop my practice as a Consultant for over 20 years .

I have a specialist interest in joint replacement surgery.  I perform a large number of hip and knee replacements per year using various fixation methods and different bearing surfaces, depending on my patients’ activity requirements.  I use minimally invasive techniques in my hip surgery and work with my anaesthetic colleagues to facilitate an enhanced rapid recovery protocol for my patients.

My experience and practice has led to the development of my specialist tertiary referral practice for hip and complex hip replacement surgery.  I perform high numbers of hip revision procedures and have wide experience in the variety of reconstructive options required for this surgery.  In addition, I have a hip resurfacing practice.

My clinical activities and outcomes are available for review in the UK National Joint Registry and a summary can be found on the NJR website by following this link.

I am invited to lecture, to discuss and to demonstrate my activities in hip surgery nationally and internationally.  I have been invited to chair a number of specialist postgraduate hip courses both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Having started the Nottingham Hip Revision Course in 2007, I am proud of how the meeting has become quite such a popular event, attracting surgeons from all around the world.  I have developed the programme for this course continuously and am delighted that many world-leading figures in hip surgery from the UK, Europe and beyond have accepted invitations to join the Faculty of the Nottingham Course.

I have published on numerous topics surrounding primary, resurfacing and revision hip arthroplasty.

I am a Past President of the British Hip Society, having been on the BHS Executive for a number of years.   I was invited to become one of only ninety surgeon members worldwide of the International Hip Society in 2018.  I was voted on to the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2019.

I am active in hip research and involved in implant development in both primary and revision hip surgery.  Having been part of a worldwide development team, I performed the first implantation of a now-established socket system in Nottingham in 2009.
